40 year old male patient has undergone several spinal surgeries. He was referred by doctors to try massage and acupuncture. Currently on a lot of pain medications – morphine, percoset, oxycontin and celexa. Not responding at all to acupuncture. Patients long term goal is to minimize or eliminate western meds but can’t go off meds without doctor’s guidance. Considering AC-Q and Resinall K but concerned about contraindications. Patient has a sensitive stomach, pain in feet, hot/cold spasms (considering Gastrodia Relieve Wind for spasms). Patient smokes about a pack a day.

Honestly, our track record of treating people on these kinds of medications is not good unless the patient is highly motivated. Obviously, these meds need to be withdrawn very slowly. You could try the herbs mentioned, however, take them 2 hours apart from Western meds, withdraw meds slowly and make sure that the patient is motivated!
