Alternatives to Analgesics
By Andrew Gaeddert

While most general practitioners believe that acetaminophen (Tylenol) is fairly safe, recent evidence from the Nurses Health Study at Harvard Medical School, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, suggest otherwise. Of the 5,123 women who began the study, none had high blood pressure when the study began. The study found that women aged fifty-one to seventy-seven, who took an average daily dose of more than 500mg of Tylenol, had double the risk of developing high blood pressure within about three years. Women in the same age range who took more than 400mg per day of NSAIDS, had a 78 percent increased risk of developing hypertension. Among women aged thirty-four to fifty-three who had an average of more than 500mg of Tylenol per day had a double the risk of developing high blood pressure. Taking more than 400mg of NSAIDs a day had a 60 percent increased risk over those who did not take the analgesics1.

It is important to note that aspirin does not have the same risks as Tylenol and NSAIDs and is not required to carry stricter warnings as manufacturers of ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve). According to Christie Ballantyne, MD, a cardiologist at Methodist De Bakey Heart Center in Houston, “If you are talking these over the counter medication at high dosages on a regular basis, make sure that you report it to your doctor and you’re checking your blood pressure.”2 Fortunately, Health Concerns make several formulas including Channel Flow®, which as been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory experiments at University of California San Francisco. In addition, we have modern and historical formulas based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), such as Mobility 2, Mobility 3, AC-Q, IBP and Collagenex, a formula which has anti-inflammatory effects and helps to restore the function of the joint and tendon matrix.
