Lutein

In a 12-month, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, ninety patients with atrophic AMD (age-related macular degeneration) were referred by ophthalmologists at two Chicago-area veterans medical facilities. Patients in Group I received 10mg of lutein, Group II received 10mg of a lutein/antioxidant/vitamin/mineral broad spectrum supplement, and Group III received a placebo. Compared to the placebo group, patients who received either the lutein alone or in combination with other nutrients showed significant improvements in several objective measurements of visual function, including glare recovery, contrast sensitivity and visual acuity. (Nutraceuticals World, June 2004: p. 63).

Health Concerns’ Bil Lutein contains taurine, bilberry fruit, and lutein derived from marigold flowers. A daily dose of 5 capsules of Bil Lutein would provide a patient with 10mg of lutein per day. The primary uses of Bil Lutein include macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, retinitis pigmentosa, poor night vision, retinal inflammation, diabetic neuropathy and myopia. Secondary uses include atherosclerosis, hypertension, and venous conditions. Bil Lutein may be useful for regulating blood glucose and to protect the eyes of diabetics.
